After reportedly lacklustre advertising efforts in the French market, Microsoft (in concert with Orange) has launched not one, but two new online advertising campaigns for Windows Phone 7: the first playing up WP7′s Xbox Live integration and “Must Have” games, the second aimed at business users.

The page linked to by the “Must Have” campaign opens with an advert for WP7 devices on Orange for a mere 19/month, and talks up the gaming features (translated:)

Yes you have a hard decision to make on Free or Paid model, I went for Free to gain members for Learn2Kitesurf.com and it got schools joining up. I actually want it to stay free for schools. I can long tail an income off the students later. Web portals have next to zero overheads so that's ok.
But if you are bricks and mortar based shifting product it changes the game. 10% off would cost you 30% of your profit. So Coupon sites are to be treated with care. Maybe use them for early clearance of expiring stock models or cashing up.
Service based operations can and should use coupon sites. They can then fill out their down time with the extra sales and not chew overheads on unproductive wages.
It comes down to managing these opportunities to your advantage and not just implementing the service on offer as the rep presents it.
How does it affect your brand? It does not damage it at all. Apple does discount! FACT but it's based on the model I explained above. You get the iPphone 3GS not the 4.
They can also consolidate product geographically and discount into specific countries thus not affecting premium chanels.

So freemium we startups have to give away their service to get credible volume.
Cool, this is basic live beta testing and 1000 users can tell you if you suck quick.
But yes you gave to make $ too so offer support for a fee. Or chargeable upgrades and phase out Free signups after a year. Don't burn your foundation members! Their the core influencers who built you.

Your brand should not be tarnished if you manage your campaigns.
It will be damaged if you offer everyone discounts everywhere on everything.

For me the biggest issue is gaining exposure as a startup.
I'm building a turnkey DIYwebsite. Building business.
Free trial but then fully paid account required.
Getting exposure for this venture is what I need help with or partnerships that could be mutually beneficial. So I'm going to try use the group coupon system for exposure as much as anything.
